Design Project - Little Girl's Bedroom

I had such a great day yesterday!  I presented a couple of design plans, one of which was a little girl's bedroom.  When I presented the plan, my client was so thrilled she had tears in her eyes!!!
Totally and completely MADE. MY. DAY!
Here are some images from the design plan.

The walls in the space were already painted a soft light pink, so we took this palette and ran with it.

Here are the fabrics that will take this cute girl from toddler to teenager.
Although I can't share the sources included in this plan (since it's work product for my client), I did want to show you the design layout and boards for the project.  I hope everybody has a great weekend.  I'm planning on getting some fun Halloween decorations up. M.

PS: If you would like help pulling a space together or creating a plan to take your current space to a whole new place, I would love to help you!

Falling Into Fall series - Part II

Time for part II of Falling Into Fall series for your home!

Last week, we talked about the use of fabrics to get a sense of the season (click here for the scoop on Fall fabrics).  Now, let's talk accessories, and the importance of natural earthy elements to give you that feeling of Fall.  What do I mean by natural earthy elements?  Well, things like deer antlers, turtle shells, acorns,  pine cones, and candles in darker hues.

While lots of people include these elements in their homes all the time, I think by rotating them in during the cooler months, you really get the most out of these accessories.
As an aside, did you notice the fabulous butterfly pendant in the image above?  Go back and take a look.  It's very cool!

I love this example because it illustrates that you can include these elements (which seem rather traditional) in a very modern space for amazing results.

Can you say weekend project for the kids?!  Maybe I'll put mine to work on Saturday.  This image makes makes me rethink the notion of cutting the sweet gum tree in our yard.

And nothing says Fall, like bittersweet and pumpkins.

For cool toned interiors, bowls of acorns and white pumpkins do the trick.  A few of you have asked me whether I have acorns again this year (I used these in several styling jobs last Fall).  I'm sad to say my oak tree did not produce many acorns this year - no idea why?

Love the feathers in this one.

Here they've paired the turtle shells with a large wooden bowl of pine cones and then the textural basket of wood in the fireplace.  All great tricks to give your room a Fall feel.

And just as important as bringing in these natural elements, you need to edit out your light/white summery accessories that speak to the warmer months.  Remember to store them in a convenient place for next Spring.  You'll be shocked the difference these small changes can make to your space.  M.

Find of the Day - Table Lamp

I just finished a design plan for a little girl's bedroom, and will be presenting it to my client this week. While sourcing items for the space, I found this great lamp for $49.99.

Although I didn't use this one in my design plan, I do think it's a fabulous lamp for the price.  Such a great option, if you need a lamp with some width for a certain spot.
 Happy Monday! M.

What's on Your Table?

With the official arrival of Fall today, I'm looking forward to a few styling jobs for clients.  Although I love the design work, the smaller stylings jobs can make a huge difference in how a home feels for the season.  These little one day mini makeovers are so much fun for me.

One question I seem to always get during these projects - "What are you going to do on your  own dining room table?"  Well, here's the answer.  I put this arrangement together yesterday.

For some reason (not sure why), tables seem to trip clients up.  Many will ask me if they should set the table for Fall with china and accessories.  (Like what you would see in shops around town this time of year.)  Personally, I'm not big fan of this unless you're actually having a dinner party.  Instead, I like to place something pretty in the center of the table which can be added to when you host a dinner party.  That way, you're not making yourself crazy the day of the party worrying about last minute details, in addition to your tablescape.

This large white pumpkin is in an orchid bowl I've had for years.  I like it because my table is unusually wide (at 60") and it really needs a substantial centerpiece to feel finished.  Then for color,  I added some bittersweet.  I also took some curly willow (I found it in the attic last week when I was up there looking for my fall decorations) and arranged it in a pedestal urn on the buffet for something sculptural.

Then in my breakfast room, I purchased a handful of tiny white and orange pumpkins and arranged them in my pedestal basket.  Remember, you don't have to fill up the container, just fill in.

I do have a few other fun Halloween decorations, but this base of pumpkins and bittersweet will remain until I'm ready for Christmas decor.

If you have time, the farmer's market is a very fun place to go this time of year.  The assortment of gourds, squash and pumpkins can inspire any seasonal arrangement.  Have a great weekend. M.

Trend Spotting - the 80's Floral

I haven't done a "trend spotting" post in quite awhile, and this one has been on my mind.  I've been noticing a huge comeback of the 1980's floral patterns for the last year.

I realize this is going to date me, but here goes it.  When I was in college, the Laura Ashley thing was so big.  This reminds me of a dress I wore during that period of time!

Every single dorm room you walked by looked like a Botanical Garden was growing in it.  It was everywhere.  I even had these director's chairs (which were all the rage for your desk chair) slipcovered in a floral.  I even had some hat boxes for additional storage that we wrapped in a floral.  What were we thinking?!

I know, I know - hard to believe the 80's floral is back.  But to prove my point, one simple search using "Schumacher Floral Fabrics" and look what came up.

I just posted an image using this fabric as a bedroom pillow on Monday.

Now, before you get worked up, I want to point out the 2012 version has tweaked the floral a bit.  We are now seeing it paired with fabulous geometrics, fretworks and IKATs in all types of textures.  Additionally, the florals are being added to rooms with neutral fabrics on the large upholstered pieces.  So, while it is a "nod" to the 1980's, it is a new take tailored to our decade.  Here are few examples I've seen.

From the amazingly talented Little Green Notebook

The modern flat trim on this pillow paired with the flange, not to mention the solid drapery panels really updates this floral.  This image is from the 2012 Atlanta Decorator's Showhouse.

Hot house flowers as drapery panels - very updated version of an 80's floral (but you do see the recycling of this trend, I'm sure). Notice the pillows she has paired in this space.

If you are not interested in spending a gazillion dollars on drapery panels, a less expensive trick is to mix the floral with other updated patterns in the form of pillows.  Remember, in the 80's the entire room would be bathed in the floral,  These pillows are from one of my favorite Etsy sources for custom high end pillows.  You're welcome :)

Again, small doses, people.

Love this Schumacher pattern and with it's colors, the entire palette of this room was created.  Real goodness here.

So, the next time you see a floral that reminds you of Laura Ashley (or where you were during that decade), you'll know it's a new trend for 2012.   Happy mid-week. M.

Falling Into Fall - Part I

Since Fall is upon us, I thought it would fun to discuss a few ways you can give your home some seasonal accents without breaking the bank.  Today, I want to talk about the use of fabrics to accomplish this.  You don't have to reupholster a chair or sofa to get this look either.  The most affordable ways are through pillows, throws, slipcovers and even strips of fabric used in clever ways to give you a custom look.

Often clients will tell me Fall colors don't go with the colors of their home.  So, their solution is to simply ignore the season and wait for Winter.  This is usually the case with cool tone interiors such as blues, grays, pinks, and lavenders.  There are ways to give these colors a Fall take.   But first lets look at the easier of the two - warm toned interiors.  The traditional colors of Fall - oranges, reds and yellows work great to give you the look if you already have a warm toned base in your space.

Warm Toned Interiors
Color blocking with orange and red velvet pillows does the trick.  Simple. Simple.  These pillows have turned this white beachy style into a cozy Fall retreat.  The rug helps too!

This works in bedrooms too.  By adding an orange blanket or duvet and just one fabulous pillow (I think this is Schumacher - Zanabar), you are there.

Look what a simple throw can do . . .  (add cut branches of leaves from the garden to a clear glass vase and you've repeated the color for amazing results).  I think it's interesting that once you added a color, any other items in the room that have that color starting speaking to it.  Did you notice the books on the console table that have orange/red yellow covers?  And the bits of rust in the painting?

Again, color blocking with orange velvet pillows and a throw.

Cool Toned Interiors
OK, so easy peasy if you have warm tones.  But what about the cool tones.  If you have cool undertones like grays and blues, what do you do?  You go for browns and greens.  You will be amazed what this can do.

In this example, the striped pillow does the trick.  Honestly, I think it is styled for Spring since you have the yellow vases, but change these to more muted tones and you are there.

In addition to color, think patterns that speak to Fall - plaids, strips and even florals in the right tones all speak to Fall.  Also, don't forget texture - flannel, wool and cashmere.

In this image there is not a bit of orange/yellow/red.  But it still feels like Fall to me with the camel throw and plaid.  So cozy.

Earlier, I mentioned strips of fabric to change the look.  You can take a strip of any Fall fabric, and change the look of a wingback chair (you could even have it monogrammed).   Sort of like this example with the chocolate flannel . . .  (sorry it's blurry, I took it with my iPhone).

And just because I'm feeling generous, here are a few of my favorite fall fabric finds.  Any of these could be custom made into pillows, slipcovers and even those super cool strips of fabric to be used on sofas, accent and dining chairs for added texture.

We Interrupt this Program . . .

I've had a very unusual week -  I had jury duty.  Although I took this seriously and wanted to do my part in the process.  I knew all along that no lawyer would think about letting me on their jury!  Since I practiced law for almost 10 years the chances of me being selected to sit on a jury are about the same as spending Spring Break on the moon!

No matter - it was still interesting.  I met a lot of people with very different life experiences.  It always amazes me to hear what the human spirit can endure.  I also realized during the process I truly don't miss practicing law.  At all!

So, today, I'm playing a bit of catch up on several design projects.  In the meantime, two of my favorite online magazines went live with new issues for the Fall.  Both are so decadent - sheer eye candy.  I continue to think, there's no way they'll top this one and they do.  If you have time today, both are worth it.

It's Monday

I hope everybody had an excellent weekend.  The weather here in Birmingham cooled off and the humidity disappeared.  It felt like Fall which is so rare this time of year in the deep South.  We had a great break and spent some time with friends at their lake house.  The cool weather and rustic feel of their house has so put me in the mood for Fall.  If you are already tired of fall images you may want to avert your eyes.  Here are a few of my favorites that are floating around on the Internet.

Love this faux bois throw.  The faux wood pattern is such a current look.  I'm seeing it on pillows, fabrics, wallpaper, even an acrylic side table.

Doesn't this make you want to grab an overnight bag and make yourself comfortable for the weekend?

I like this entire outfit, but that bag is screaming my name.

I have to plan an evening when it's a bit cool to sit outside with a cozy throw like this.

Just good on every. single. level.

Can you hear how quiet it is in the image.  Totally unwind here.

I can imagine the lake just beyond the trees.  This room appears to have a panoramic view.

I'm thinking if we all think "cool weather" thoughts maybe it will stay awhile.  I would love a week at the current temp.  How about you? M.
